As of tomorrow, NSW is banning the sale of any single-use plastics. While a step in the right direction, this is just a tiny drop in the bucket versus what Australia really needs to do to be a climate leader.
The Saturday Paper this weekend accused Canberra of “state-sponsored greenwashing.” Australia will go to the UN climate conference in just a few weeks well behind on its own climate commitments as well as other developed nations. As the country continues its dirty little habit of digging things out of the ground, a few less plastic straws at Sydney cafes isn’t going to do a whole lot.
