Twas the Night Before Publication

“Sure. I can write two books at the same time. How hard could it be?”
I may be one of the only humans to have ever uttered such a silly string of words. They came out on a call with the lovely editors at Kogan Page and as I was already deep into writing my third book. The proposition on offer was crafting a title aimed at business professionals, particularly Chief Sustainability Officers. Or, as one editor put it, the kind of thing a busy exec would pick up at an airport bookstore.
For anyone who’s read my previous books, you’ll recognise this as being well outside my comfort zone as an author. The subject matter wasn’t an issue as I’ve devoted twenty years to the space, advising companies, governments, and practitioners of all sorts, so had plenty to say. But I’ve spent my life as a writer simplifying sustainability for the general public, with a voice to match. Now, I would have to speak in a way I normally reserved exclusively for my business interactions.
It’s been no small feat to do away with the simplifications (and profanity) in my writing. But through the gentle prodding from a team of amazing editors, and belief in the noble work we’ve all dedicated our lives to, I’ve been able to distil two decades of global knowledge into 300-ish pages. More than that, I’ve put together a first-of-its-kind journey through our past, present, and future.
My voice may be different, but my purpose is steadfast.
My goal is to demonstrate that although times may seem dark, the future of the planet, society, and our profession is bright.
My hope is that this book encourages you to embrace your unique role in building that brighter future.
Now, with less than 24 hours until publication, I'm more excited than ever to have gone on this journey. My hope is you'll be equally excited about the result.
